La 6è de Mahler marque un tournant décisif dans le travail de l’orchestre et du chef britannique : voici leur premier enregistrement de novembre 1987 ; puis celui de juin 2018, – soit 30 ans après, tel le volet de la saison des adieux, car Simon Rattle quitte le direction musicale à l’été 2018 (après 16 années d’une direction qui laisse pourtant mitigé). C’est un apport réfléchi qui trouve un écho précédent d’une admirable profondeur, plus profonde, mieux ambivalente à notre avis ; avec les années, la sonorité s’est enrichie, atteignant une rondeur hédoniste que n’aurait pas désavoué Claudio Abbado. Mais qui a perdu son sens des contrastes et des vertiges intérieurs… Avec les années, Rattle s’est comme assagi, optant en 2018 pour une lecture d’une perfection sonore très (trop) séduisante) ; mais en novembre 1987, il y avait un souffle d’une tension « wagnérienne », une âpreté qui s’est atténuée avec les années… La confrontation entre les deux lectures est passionnante et dévoile l’évolution d’un travail en complicité et en approfondissement. Double vision en guise de testament artistique du chef qui tire sa révérence, et fait ainsi ses adieux en juin 2018 par l’enregistrement, aux instrumentistes du Berliner Philharmoniker.
